History
Founded in 2008, Invenfin is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Remgro (Pty) Ltd. Invenfin specialises in early-stage venture capital (VC) funding, providing start-up capital to entrepreneurs to fund the commercialisation of their intellectual property internationally.
Offering more than just access to capital, Invenfin also possesses extensive experience in commercialisation of new ventures and products (including branding, product development, marketing, legal protection and global distribution). In addition, it draws on the international business networks of Remgro and the enlarged group.
The company extends funding for a period typically extending one to three years, ordinarily in exchange for a significant minority stake in the business (normally in the range of 30%-49%). During that time it provides hands-on guidance to its investees, readying them for full commercialisation of their offering, before exiting at the appropriate time by way of a sale of the venture or the rights to its intellectual property.
Whereas some have questioned the quality of innovation in South Africa, Invenfin has identified several investments that have met its criteria and has invested in 5 companies to date.
While the venture capital sector has had its challenges over the years, it is still seen as the one opportunity to generate exceptional results and stimulate new economic growth. The current increased interest in venture capital, both internationally and locally, from corporate as well as angel investors, supports our belief in this sector of investment and our confidence in its potential to deliver exciting returns.
